DVD Review: Good movie but watch what version you buy

Barfly is a good film in its own right. You will probably enjoy this much better if you have read Bukowskis "Hollywood".
Charles Bukowski wrote the screenplay for the movie and had a "cameo" in one of the bar scenes with Rourke and Dunaway.
When I first saw this movie on late night I thought it was great, Dunaway and Rourke were into the characters and the movie is one of a kind.
I didn't know who Bukowski was at that time but years later found his poetry and prose and it really changed my life.
After reading more of Bukowskis stuff I kind of lost some enthusiasm for the performances. I just feel after reading the books that it didn't translate as well as it could have been.
Be careful what you are buying, original Region 1 (NTSC)USA copies are getting hard to find and will cost you.
I bought the latest release which is PAL/REGION 0 format. If you reside in the U.S. you will probably have a Region 1 (NTSC) player, PAL versions use a different video encoding which is not compatible with NTSC.
The original release also contains the commentary by the director Barbet Schroeder which this PAL version does not, just the movie on this one.
