DVD Review: Best Horror Movie EVER!

I've never been a big fan of horror movies, but this movie came STRONGLY recommended by a friend who is a "Horror Master." I couldn't believe that this was an independent film by a first-time director. It was far and above any other horror movie I've seen, and I've been recommending it to all my friends. I've never written a review before, but I couldn't pass by an opportunity to endorse this movie to all Horror Lovers or anyone who enjoys a well written, acted, and directed production. Although this movie IS on the shelves at Blockbuster, it should have been given more (or ANY) publicity by Maverick - they really dropped the ball on promoting this one (Maverick).
The acting is 4-star, with well-developed characters that really made you feel for (or against) them - my favorite being the sleazy "guidance counselor" that the protagonist turns to as a last resort. The director captures the attitude, dialogue, and lives of high schoolers perfectly, without resorting to stereotypes. Another of the many details that have made me an instant fan of this director (sadly, this is his first picture - hopefully there will be more to come) is his ability to carry off the crux of the film, the horrible gang-rape scene, without resorting to gratuitous nudity. Definitely an "edge-of-your-seat" thriller with an explosive ending that is not for the faint of heart, and that stays true to the rest of the movie.
There are no tricks, no gimmicks, just 100% fantastic filmmaking from top to bottom. Not recommended for the young or squeamish, although again, the director does not rely heavily on gruesome special effects, but rather gets his points across with much more subtlety. This is a movie that stays strong over repeated watchings and has earned a place in my all-time top 10 movies, horror or not.
Remember the name Jim Hemphill - he is an uber-talented writer AND director and hopefully this release will get him the recognition he deserves, as well as (hopefully, in this viewers mind) the opportunity to create more quality cinema like this one.
