DVD Review: Baby Homer Simpson? TV not for babies even if "Einstein" is in the name...
Summary: 3 Stars
The name "Baby Einstein" can trick you into thinking it's okay or even good for babies to watch t.v., but the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no television at all to children under the age of 2 because so many studies have proven its harmful effects on children. Studies have shown that:
- for every hour of television a baby watches a day, their chances of acquiring
an attention deficit disorder increases by 10%.
- among babies ages 8 months to 16 months, every hour spent daily watching
programs such as 'Brainy Baby' or 'Baby Einstein' translated into six to
eight fewer words in their vocabularies as compared with other children
their age.
- brain wave activity in babies is slower when watching television than when
sleeping.
My main objection with Baby Einstein is the way it is clearly marketed to *babies* and with the word *Einstein* implying intelligence, education, learning, etc. I do not think any DVD should be marketed to babies when the American Assocation of Pediatrics recommends no tv to children 2 and under. As for making babies more intelligent, recent studies have shown that the best way to make babies smarter is to carry them a lot. Babies who are carried an extra 3 hours per day cry 40% less and this effect is lasting. Frequently held babies also pick up verbal skills faster, and develop better core muscle strength and balance. Essentially, as Dr. William Sears writes, "relationships, not things, make babies smarter." I have tried most every carrier and believe that the Ergo Baby Carrier (4 mos and up) is easily the most comfortable, versatile, convenient and helpful by far.
A nice compromise between video and relationships is the "SIGNING TIME" dvd series because children learn to communicate in sign language which is proven to:
- reduce frustration and tantrums
- accelerate language development
- promote parent-child bonding
These are top quality dvds but expensive. I found the entire series at my local library. I especially liked Volume 4: Family, Feelings & Fun DVD because naming feelings increases emotional intelligence.
My main objection with Baby Einstein dvds is that it is marketed to BABIES and that EINSTEIN suggests greater intelligence when the opposite could be the actual result if used improperly and for children who are too young. After the age of two, I have no objection with these DVDs -- they are fun and not too animated for older toddlers.
