DVD Reviews of Auntie Mame

DVD Review: Fun with an eccentric aunt
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a wonderful film and has long been one of my favorites. Rosalind Russell gives a classic performance as Mame Dennis in the film version of the play that later was used to create the musical "Mame". The film runs the gamut from wacky comedy to some wonderful pathos as Mame takes over the raising of Patrick, her orphaned nephew. I've always gotten a special kick out of the scenes between the young boy and Mame, they are so well played and have a special magic all their own. More than a few tugs at your heartstrings too. The film is wonderfully scored by Bronislaw Kaper and this edition of the DVD includes a special feature where you can watch the film only with the music, no dialogue. That is just great as far as I am concerned as I think this is a truly fabulous score (overlooked for an Oscar) and it's a treat to hear it by itself. The film was nominated for Best Picture (lost to "Gigi"), Rosalind Russell was nominated for Best Actress (lost to Susan Hayward but Ros did win her third Golden Globe for the role), and the major technical awards in 1958 were swept by "Gigi". The direction is a bit stagebound by todays standards but don't let that stop you from enjoying this marvelously witty comedy with a top notch cast.

DVD Review: A bit of Sunshine in a Box
Summary: 5 Stars

I had an Auntie Mame in my life and before she died recently I gave her a copy of this movie and we watched it together and laughed and reminisced together and just enjoyed the movie and each other's company. Then she was gone. I'll always treasure that day and the memories I made with my Auntie Mame. Don't pass up an opportunity to enjoy true entertainment - and have a few tissues handy too!

This entertainment was indeed magic, great humour and acting, with
excellent creativity, colourful and bobmbastic ("Life is a banquet")

DVD Review: Roz In Drag As Bette Davis?
Summary: 2 Stars

I liked this movie as a kid, and I read the book fairly recently, which I still like; but for some time, this movie has seemed like a fish too odd for a market (And yes, the Lucille Ball version is even worse!!!). I am most certainly out of the pond on this one. The movie unfolds like a play, it goes to black at the end of many scenes, and Rosalind Russell plays the part with a manic energy of a drag queen on the stage of an elegant piano bar; like there's no one else up on stage with her, save for the pianist. There are props, and some of them are living, but Roz talks to the camera, or someone, and half the time she's talking like Charles Pierce doing Bette Davis, lots of arm waving; cavalier pronouncements, it's all so...gay. I'd love to see this at the Castro Theater. As a movie, I just can't recommend it. I can't watch it but for wondering who let, or convinced, Rosalind Russell to act so over the top, and to become such a caricature. It's like I want Rosalind Russell to shut up and be an actress. Maybe I just don't see her as the star she saw her self to be... Yet, everyone loves this film. I don't get it. To me this is an awful movie with big stars and excellent production values. Oh well. I can hate it, and you can buy it, and maybe you'll hate it and listen to me next time...

Description of Auntie Mame

Rosalind Russell recreates her hallmark stage role as the accentric grande dame of highlife, briging up a 10-year-old nephew. A banquet of laughter, nominated for 6 Academy Awards(R).
Remember darlings, "Life's a banquet, and most suckers are starving to death." That tag line sums up this exuberant and immensely amusing 1958 comedy that can be seen repeatedly, as it never grows stale. Rosalind Russell plays the flamboyant aunt who takes in poor, orphaned Patrick, played with sophisticated ease by Jan Handzlik. Mame, all glitter and martinis, raises her nephew in a world filled with acceptance and her oddball literati friends. Nothing is too bohemian. This unfolds in colorful episodic segments that allow us to watch Patrick grow as Mame oversees his unusual upbringing while she juggles a few spouses and an extended household. Russell, who created the title role for the stage, simply shines. She is bright and brassy, but never goes too far over the top. Peggy Cass is a comedic delight as her befuddled secretary, and Coral Browne brings class to the production as her best friend. This was based on the exuberant stage play, which in turn was based on Patrick Dennis's humorous, bittersweet novel. The screen version was written by the clever duo of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Not to be confused with the pathetically lackluster musical version starring Lucille Ball (1974), simply entitled Mame. --Rochelle O'Gorman
