DVD Review: Finally, Some Good News

Usually economists and business leaders can be so money-obsessed and conservative, it's hard to watch them discuss their right-wing ideas. So this work was a breath of fresh hair. The speaker said, "Credit should be a human right." Now that's powerful!

I haven't seen "An Inconvenient Truth" or "Schindler's List" because they deal with sad topics. If I don't know how I can solve a tragedy, I sometimes don't have the power to listen to discussions about it. This DVD offers a solution to global poverty. It shows a way to turn things around and decrease the human population at the same time. To some this work may seem too self-congratulatory, however.

In "The Karma of Brown Folks," Brown University alumnus Vijay Prashad writes of this long history of Westerners thinking of South Asian men only in terms of swamis and gurus. I'm worried that the speaker may be easily thought of as guru-like. He doesn't sport long hair or have any marking on his forehead. He may be wearing South Asian garb, but he is only recorded from the shoulders upward. Still, it may be easy for viewers to reduce him to a swami, rather than take him seriously as an effective, progressive macroeconomist. I sincerely hope that the audience can move past controlling images and think deeply about what is being said.
