DVD Reviews of As Time Goes By - Reunion Special

DVD Review: As time goes by-reunion special
Summary: 5 Stars

I've always enjoyed this series and I had seen bits and pieces of this special on PBS advertising, especially during pledge weeks. It was a good closure, at that time of the show. Hopefully they'll make one more to show how the relationships have progressed.

It's a good show to watch to see people's characters develop.

DVD Review: A REUNION SET THAT FEELS MORE JUST LIKE A CONTINUANCE OF THE GREAT, GREAT SERIES
Summary: 5 Stars

Everyone is back and in peak performance behind Judi Dench (Jean Pargetter role) and Goeffrey Palmer (Lionel, Li). Daughter Judy, having married Alistar, after only a year, is not yet pregnant to the dismay of Jean. Meanwhile, Sandy and her cop/husband Harry, are returning after his year working with the Canadian Mounties. Life picks up with relationships and events involving these 6 as usual, like the series never stopped. Several other characters from the past, both family and friend, join the cast in these reunion segments.

My wife and I were wishing for more after the extremely lengthy set of DVD episodes from the complete "As Time Goes By." We were pleased to find this DVD two episodes to simply be a continuation of the fantastic writing and acting that made the series so successful. This DVD is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who owns or has watch the earlier presentations. It is like a couple of cherries placed on top of the banana-split.
See my review of the complete series for added information and purchase encouragement.

The special features--bloopers and Making It--are much fun and too short but add to the value of this DVD. Every episode from "As Time Goes By" including this "Reunion Specials" set will be watched again at our house.

I'd even suggest this as a wedding gift to senior couples marrying late in life. Those second chance romances. "As Time Goes By" is a rare look at life in all it's honesty, and the glorious years after 40-something, 50-something, 60-something, or who knows?

Jolly good show. Spot on!

DVD Review: Don'sl Review
Summary: 5 Stars

"As Time Goes BY' is my favorite British comedy. Although, not really a comedy but a comedy series, I still play it, from time to time, from beginning to end, and I watch individual segments on MPT when shown in the afternoon and evening. The cast is made for each other. Their blend is magnificent. I particularily like Jean and Lionel, Rocky and Mrs. Bales (especially Mrs. Bales), and of course, Judith and Sandy. Alastair can be overbearing, but is still a critical element in the mix to made the series a hit. My favorite segements are when Lionel take Jean to meet Rocky, Lionel tells off the Red One city crowd, the admiration by the village folks, and the dog segment. A lesson can be learned from Jean persistent lying, you always get in trouble. I highly recommend this series to anyone. The reunion with inthe introduction of Lional's son is priceles, and floors the nosey Penny. Don.

Wonderful though brief continuation of the British Sit Com series that left us all wishing for much more when it ended. Endearing and very funny. With that cast and writer, you could never go wrong!

Description of As Time Goes By - Reunion Special

The lyrically funny romance of Jean and Lionel continues its whimsical course in the Reunion Specials as Jean Pargetter's (Dame Judi Dench) great anticipation for grandchildren is revealed much to husband Lionel's (Geoffrey Palmer) dismay. With son-in-law Alistair and daughter Judy having problems things don't look too promising. But will Jean's dream of becoming a grandmother come true when Sandy and her husband Harry return from Canada?
The rich, textured chemistry of Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer remains a pleasure in this two-episode reunion special of the beloved British sitcom As Time Goes By, the ongoing story of a couple that lost touch in their youth and rediscovered their love later in life. Made three years after the last season but starting right where the last episode left off, Part 1 begins with Jean (Dench, Mrs. Brown) feathering the nest for grandchildren, even though Lionel (Palmer, He Knew He Was Right) points out that neither Judy (Moira Brooker) nor Sandy (Jenny Funnell) have gotten pregnant yet. It turns out that Judy and Alistair (Philip Bretherton) have been trying, with no results, and Judy suspects the problem may be Alistair--who is wildly overcompensating to prove his virility. Meanwhile, Sandy is upset because Harry (David Michaels) seeks a promotion that may put him in harm's way. And in the middle of all this, Lionel gets a very unexpected visitor from Africa.

If you're unfamiliar with As Time Goes By, this is not the place to start--the great pleasure to be had from these episodes comes from having watched the wonderful development of these characters over the nine previous series. As ever, the humor is subtle, gentle, but always psychologically apt and acted with deft aplomb. Dench and Palmer are compelling and delightful as a married couple who may find each other exasperating yet never fall out of love. Also included are outtakes from throughout the previous series and a short but charming documentary that follows the creation of an episode--the marriage of Judy and Alistair--from the first read-through to the final filming in front of an audience. Fans will be thrilled to get a glimpse of Bob Larbey and Sydney Lotterby, the two men who respectively wrote and directed every single episode of the show from the beginning. --Bret Fetzer
