DVD Reviews of Aquamarine

DVD Review: Doesn't Make a Splash, but Youngsters Will Like it Nonetheless
Summary: 2 Stars

Adopted from the novel by Alice Hoffman, Aquamarine is a movie about a mermaid of the same name who needs to find love in order to avoid having to marry a man that her father has approved for her and to prove him wrong (he doesn't believe love exists) about human emotions. The deal she and her father strike is a simple one: If she can find love in three days, she can escape the arranged marriage. If she doesn't find it, she will be forced to accept the hand of a man she doesn't love.

Aquamarine has all the qualities one would expect in this type of movie: Juvenile situations, girls who are infatuated with the same guy, and plenty of young girl silliness. It's a premise that has been used over and over in movies before: A bunch of girls like the same guy and fight for his affections, with only one victorious in the end. Contrived and predictable, it's the type of plot one expects in a young chick flick.

Some parts of this movie will have relevance to the young girls that comprise its primary audience and this is one of the reasons that children in the 7 to 13 age group will probably enjoy this film. There are several scenes where Aquamarine, Claire, and Hailey (the two girls who discover her) are forced to lock horns with the gal pal of the guy they like. Her name is Cecillia (played by Arielle Kebbel), and she is joined by a cast of arrogant friends. Aquamarine shows the girls, without realizing it, that they can and should have more confidence in themselves. They should stand up to Cecillia and others like her and not listen to the nasty things she and her friends say. There is also the message of friendship that most will relate to. At the beginning of the film, for example, Claire and Hailey are both willing to give up on their dream of falling in love and fighting over the same guy in the process if it means getting a wish fulfilled that will prevent Hailey from moving to Australia.

There is a certain degree of innocence that will make Aquamarine appealing to some moviegoers, but there are plenty of flaws with this movie that will make others consider it weak and forgettable. First of all, this is obviously not a critical masterpiece. The characters are empty and you don't feel you know any of them very well. The story is predictable and unexciting, with a small amount of emotion added for minimal effect. But there isn't much else to this movie, and even the performance of Sara Paxton as Aquamarine (about the only decent one in the movie) isn't quite good enough to save the film.

Speaking of performances, those of Joanna Levesque and Emma Roberts (Claire and Hailey) are both a little weak, and this is especially true of Roberts. Levesque at least keeps your attention and her expressions seem to be true to her feelings. Roberts isn't very good, however, and she doesn't look as good as she has in other pictures. Jake McDorman, who plays Raymond (the girls' common love interest), is also a little on the empty side. You don't feel like you know much about him at all when the credits roll, even after seeing him on the screen for a good part of the movie.

Custom made to appeal to tweenagers, Aquamarine has adolescent charm and it's harmful enough that most parents will approve. But unless you're age 14 and under and female, there is little to recommend with Aquamarine. It has a few moments of fun, some social relevance, and some lessons on friendship without being preachy. But its appeal is very limited and it's the type of movie most will quickly forget.

Description of Aquamarine

Two best friends get exactly what they fish for in Aquamarine, a laugh-out-loud hilarious comedy about friendship! Emma Roberts, Sara Paxton and pop sensation JoJo star in an adventure that's "the sweetest treat since Princess Diaries!" (Yahoo! Movies)

It's the end of summer and Claire (Roberts) and Hailey (JoJo) have a major problem. In just five days, Hailey's family is moving halfway around the world! These girls need a major miracle, and they get one in the form of Aquamarine, a beautiful mermaid who washes ashore in a late summer storm. Sweet but clueless to the ways of romance, she offers to grant the girls one wish if they help her find the boy of her dreams. But when they attempt to reel in the cute local lifeguard, the result is something none of them expect and they discover that sometimes what you wish for isn't what you really want after all!

The sun, the sand, and a sweet sassy mermaid--what more could any young girl want from summer? Claire (Emma Roberts, Nancy Drew: The Mystery in Hollywood Hills) and Hailey (JoJo, R.V.) go giddy at the sight of hunky lifeguard Raymond (Jake McDorman). When a storm washes a mermaid named Aquamarine (Sara Paxton, Sleepover) into a swimming pool, Claire and Hailey agree to help her find love--even if it's with Raymond--because Aquamarine will grant them a wish that will keep Hailey from having to move away to Australia. Parents of preteen girls may approach Aquamarine with dread, but the movie's formulaic beginnings are given a heartening twist; the movie starts by wallowing in Cosmogirl-fueled boy-craziness, but finishes as an unexpectedly touching paean to friendship (with some surprisingly down-to-earth suggestions about romance). Roberts and JoJo are a charming duo, eager to be older than they are, but in the end growing up no faster than they need to. Also featuring Bruce Spence, known to some viewers as the Gyro Captain from The Road Warrior and to others as the voice of a shark in Finding Nemo. --Bret Fetzer
