DVD Review: "Welcome To The Bunkers!"

On January 12, 1971 television as we knew it would never be the same. Beginning to fade from the network landscape were rural sitcoms that featured country folk in unmemorable situations. Instead, starting with "All in The Family" TV comedy would deal with controversial issues told with a comedic side. As Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker) once said, "the best way to deal with tough issues is to use humor; then the difficult situation is brought to its knees". Other sitcoms of the seventies like "Mary Tyler Moore", "Good Times", and "Maude" all dealt with the current issues of the day that made headlines, but "All in The Family" towered all other shows in that regard. In the first season alone the series dealt with bigotry toward African/Americans and homosexuality, all taboo topics in the early 1970's. CBS even offered a disclaimer before the original episode broadcasts just in case some viewers would find the shows offensive.
"All in The Family" made its network debut as a midseason replacement (finishing at #34 for the season) and CBS buried it in a terrible timeslot. It wasn't until the summer when repeats of the first season were shown that "All in The Family" became the TV phenomenon that it was. By the second year it was firmly established as the #1 rated series on American television, and it was an Emmy-award sitcom, winning in its first year for Best Comedy and Best Actress in a Comedy for Jean Stapleton.
In this wonderful boxset all 13 season one episodes are included uncut and remastered. For keen viewers who love watching DVD's with an eye for extraordinary color and clarity, yes the episodes are clear and vibrant, but the colors are poor. This is in no way due to how the series was transferred to DVD, but the way the show was originally produced. Norman Lear, the series creator, had actually wanted CBS to air the sitcom in black and white, but thankfully the network refused. Instead, Norman decided to use as little color with "All in The Family", so the episodes look drab and dreary because Norman felt that since the show dealt with dark issues, the series should be broadcast using drab colors to reflect the series' mood.
All of the seasons of "All in The Family" will be made available soon since 2010 when "Shout!" announced they would be releasing the remainder of the last three seasons. And like other box sets there are no bonuses.
