DVD Reviews of Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Extreme Unrated Set + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]DVD Review: Whiners Summary: 5 Stars Look, some people are angry that the movie isn't a Halloween fright and a slow paced movie like Alien. But remember this is in a town not a confined space. Things happen quickly.
The did a great job. I loved their introduction of the military which seemed tougher than the Marines of Aliens (however I can't see how--well you'll have to see it).
Anyways it was a good movie and fun for a wider audience. People want to see a fast paced adventure. Though it is true that I got lost with some of the charater names, but who cares. Its just "that chick" or "that cop dude". No names needed.
Just watch it and relax.
DVD Review: This is not a bad movie Summary: 4 StarsEveryone keeps complaining about the darkness of the movie, but I have no problem with it. If you have the Blu-ray version, and your actually viewing true high-def, then it shouldn't be a problem for you, either. A lot of people don't realize that to have true high-def you need more than just a Blu-ray player or PS3 and a high-def tv..You need the cables, too. Classics like the Halloween series, Friday the 13th, Predator 2, Alien/Aliens all had their climatic moments in dark lighting, and no one complained about them..So why is it such a problem now? Grow up, people. AVP-R has a great transfer onto Blu-ray that gives reference quality(best of the best in high-def) almost throughout the whole movie. It is a great step up from the first movie, and has an extremely large amount of special features..Including a huge database of Alien and Predator info that most people don't know about. It is well worth the buy for fans of Alien or Predator movies.
DVD Review: Requiem ... that's an understatement ... Summary: 1 Stars
The biggest problem with this movie was that it didn't seem to take the previous films from both franchises very seriously at all, nor show the art of it any respect.
I can understand how a person, during the filmmaking process, can think that the canon of the franchise can act as sort of set pieces to elevate the storyline, but in this case dealing with something that goes goes back almost thirty years, treating The Predator and The Alien as set pieces, and something to push one's career, is probably a very bad idea.
The film comes off as a teen slasher flick, an ensemble piece from the ranks of High School Musical, trying to showcase certain actors. Unfortunately, there's just too many actors and story lines to follow. This doesn't confuse the plot as much as it waters it down. Many moments in this come off as 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', just substitute the Aliens for the Slasher guy in the raincoat.
The previous film in this series was actually much better. It was gripping, fast paced, original and cool. But 'The Brothers Strause' (whatever appeal that moniker seems to have is lost on me) seem to have dropped the ball here showing their real ability to write and direct good Science Fiction. Lets remember that 'Alien' actually won the prestigious Hugo award in 1981. This is nothing more than schlock dressed up in familiar costume.

DVD Review: Redemption from AVP, too many characters Summary: 3 StarsAfter AVP, I felt this franchise was dead. As a huge fan of the original Alien, Aliens and Predator, the AVP film was silly and inconsequential to me. Many of the scenes involving fights and the dialogue of the humans was almost comical (one of my "favorites" is when the human and predator "team up" and are running in sync with hair and braids flying in sync)-looks like I was in a romantic comedy. The first AVP was also very dark and slow moving.
While AVP 2 Requiem does not come close to the quality of fright and "wow" reactions I experienced for the original franchise films, the second part, had a faster pace and some interesting "species" specific on screen behavior (such as the "insemination" of the human mothers). The scenes still remained overly dark, but the PQ and AQ were more than adequate. The sound was powerful and detail crisp.
I was happy to see the return of a strong female lead character, although at times, there were simply too many characters to become invested in the survival. The end was a bit abrupt, but the last scene with "Mrs. Yutani" provided a twist that tied the first Alien movies to a possible sequel.
In addition, I wish there had been a prolonged battle scene between the two species. They seemed more like "scuffles".
For its effects and redemption, this film is worth a rent if you're a fan of the other films. Lets hope the next film continues a positive evolution of the franchise and introduces a more focused plot and developed characters.
DVD Review: Deserves one Star for the Blue-Ray format Summary: 1 StarsI am a huge huge fan of both Aliens and Predators movies. AVP was great, but REQUIEM is really really unbearable, I just fast-forwarded to the end of the movie. Really a huge insult to any Aliens and Predators fans out-there.
I give one Star for the beautiful Blue-Ray formats : the picture, the colors, the sounds were excellent ... but for the movie itself, sorry to say this, definitely one of the worst in the history of Sci-Fic movie ever made. Don't buy.
Description of Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Extreme Unrated Set + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]Packed with adrenaline-pumping action and heart-stopping suspense this spectacular sequel escalates the war between sci-fi's scariest movie icons! On Earth everyone can hear you scream especially when a horrifying PredAlien crash-lands near a small Colorado town killing everyone it encounters-and producing countless Alien offspring-with terrifying efficiency. When a lone Predator arrives to "clean up" the infestation it's an all-out battle to the death with no rules no mercy and hundreds of innocent people caught in the crossfire. As the creature carnage continues a handful of human survivors attempt a daring escape but the U.S. government may be hatching a deadly plan of its own...System Requirements:Running Time: 105 minutesFormat: BLU-RAY DISC Genre:?SCI-FI/FANTASY/ALIENS Rating:?UNRATED UPC:?024543507642 Manufacturer No:?2250764 For those who found 2004's Aliens vs. Predator too lightweight in the gore-and-guns department, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem offers a marked improvement in both categories, as well as a respectable amount of rumbles between the title extraterrestrials. Set in the 21st century (which predates the story to all of the Alien features), Requiem sends a crippled Predator ship crashing to Earth in a small Colorado town; unbeknownst to the locals, the craft is loaded with H.R. Giger's insectoid monsters, which make quick work of most of the population. As the human cast is slowly whittled to a few hardy (if unmemorable) souls, a Predator warrior also arrives to complicate matters and do battle with the Aliens, as well as a ferocious alien-Predator hybrid (dubbed a Predalien by the sci-fi and horror press). Visual-effects designers and music-video helmers The Strause Brothers (who make their feature directorial debut here) keep the action on frantic throughout, which is wise, since the dialogue and characters are threadbare at best; that should matter little to teenage male viewers, who are inarguably the film's key audience. Fans of the Alien franchise, however, may find the offhanded nod to the series' mythology given during the finale its sole saving grace. --Paul Gaita
