DVD Review: The Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen (Worse than Manos and The Room)
Summary: 1 Stars

THE REVIEW:

I bought this for my friend for his birthday. We have this tradition of exchanging joke presents. After I listened to Spill talking about it during their Worst Movies of 2009 podcast, I knew I had to see it. I saw the trailer and I heard the stories, but I didn't know it was going to be this bad.

Now I have seen movies made with no budget. Clerks was made for about $27,000 and Primer cost about $7,000. If you look at those and other independent, micro-budget films, you can tell that they didn't have a ten million dollar budget. Despite this, they are still enjoyable and achieve quite a lot, through writing, directing, passion, effort, and creativity, to overcome that.

Unfortunately, After Last Season does not. Instead we are given a paper MRI machine. I will repeat that. A paper MRI machine. This machine is located in a pink room (probably somebody's bedroom). It is too obvious that the director tried to make a film that was out of his means. Regrettably, this is least of the film's problems.

The absolute best example of this is the CGI sequences. My guess is the film ran out of budget or the people quit the film or the animators didn't have enough time to finish it. While I consider this to be a high possibility, it still doesn't excuse how terrible it looks. I honestly have no idea how long these sequences are. My guess is fifteen to twenty minutes. Fifteen to twenty minutes of a ninety minute film are wasted on computer graphics which look like an unfinished, unrendered high school student's Maya project. If you don't want to see floating spheres, spinning cubes, random flying bricks and lines, and flat, unnatural people and animals for at least fifteen minutes, then run far away. During these scenes, there is basically no dialogue. Instead they are accompanied by the film's loud, annoying and amateurish music. If you have seen the trailer, you have an idea of the quality of this film's CGI.

Again, it doesn't matter that the animation was left unfinished. All animation looks bad when it isn't completed. Still, if you market a movie, show it in theaters, burn it to a DVD, and sell that DVD to the open market, then it better be finished. There are no excuses for those fifteen minutes of film. Alright, let's move on.

Most of the movie takes place in a series of hallways and rooms with the brightest light kit I have ever seen. You won't go blind watching the film or anything like that, but it is the most distracting and unnecessary lighting I can think of. Most of the action which takes place in this room is partially random. The plot does become a bit more clear and concise towards the end. You don't understand the importance of everything until the last ten or fifteen minutes of the movie. Still, I couldn't care less. I had no idea who about half of the characters were.

The acting is bad, but it isn't Tommy Wiseau (The Room) bad. In my opinion, most of the fault falls on the director. The actors either wander through the film as if they were required to do it or for some reason appear awkward. After Last Season has a fixation with long pauses or blank stares, so there are plenty of moments when literally nothing happens even though there are two characters in frame having a conversation.

This is probably a good time to talk about the random shots of furniture. Oh. My. God. Maybe this film is a masterpiece and I merely fail to see the symbolism and imagery After Last Season is packed with. Actually no. They are pointless. How does a ten to twenty second shot of a chair or table benefit this film's plot? Or better yet, how does twenty random shots benefit this movie? If you removed every unnecessary shot of a chair or table, you would probably cut about five minutes from the film. If you are keeping track, that's around twenty to twenty-five minutes of film featuring the worst Maya animation and chairs. I hope you are getting a sense of how much time is wasted on this film.

After Last Season fails to keep my interest. The randomness, the poor production values, the terrible score, and the unconvincing and bland acting make it extremely difficult for me to care about anything at all. About half the plot made sense to me. A part of this is probably because After Last Season is one of those films you need to see more than once. This is of course assuming the randomly introduced characters and closeups of potted plants have something to do with the story. But this movie is simply too painful for that. After Last Season doesn't spark the interest or fascination created from a movie like Inception or 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it also doesn't create the surreality or mystery a film like Inland Empire has.

It is entirely possible to create an enjoyable or great film which is either extraordinarily complicated or unbelievably out of control, surreal and insane. To me After Last Season falls somewhere in-between these two categories. However, the film doesn't capture my interest enough for me to care. This of course doesn't matter at all, because After Last Season is so frustratingly bad.

The laughable production values are enough to make most people take the film less seriously. The unusual and, at times, just plain awful editing, lightning, cinematography, special effects, and directing makes everything worse. On top of all that, there is the overall sound quality. The film sounds like a play which was recorded from the audience. The music is too loud. Not only that, but in many shots there are weird noises. I'm not sure if these are intentional. Assuming the sound wasn't intentional, then you have to listen to somewhat important scenes with what seems like a toilet continuously flushing waste down into a cesspool located underneath the set. Assuming the sound was intentional, one of the crew members is a moron, because he or she thought the film needed to have the sound of a toilet continuously flushing waste down into a cesspool located underneath the set. Whatever the reason, it still sucks.

No matter how I describe After Last Season, most of it needs to be seen for yourself. It is much more powerful to experience a god awful movie than to read dozens of descriptions.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This movie is worse than The Room, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, and every other film I despise. Actually, those three movies are nothing compared to After Last Season. For years Manos: The Hands of Fate was my most hated movie. While Manos is worse in some regards (the dubbing, the quality of the film stock to name a few), After Last Season manages to piss me off more. Maybe it's because Manos makes me laugh more, making it a more enjoyable experience.

In my mind, Manos is really funny for the first twenty minutes and the last ten or fifteen. In the middle, there is a gap which isn't nearly as funny. Because there are fewer laughs, there are fewer distractions. At this point, the film really starts to eat away at you. This is when it truly feels awful and becomes a chore. Overall, After Last Season has fewer funny moments. In other words, there are more intolerable parts and not enough to make the experience somewhat enjoyable.

It is a thin line, but to me After Last Season is worse than Manos: The Hands of Fate, making it the worst movie I have ever seen. This is only the second movie I would give a 0/10. If you love watching bad movies, you have to see this movie.

ABOUT THE DVD:

I didn't see a director's commentary or special features of any kind at my friend's house. You just get the movie and two trailers. This means After Last Season is overpriced (I paid about $20). It isn't worth the money, especially since you will probably only want to watch it once, but you still have to see the movie. Hopefully it will appear on Netflix sometime.

Description of After Last Season

One of the most intriguing and amazing films of the year is now on DVD. AFTER LAST SEASON opened on June 5th, 2009 in select theaters (Lancaster, CA; North Aurora, IL; Rochester, NY; Austin, TX) and received great audience reactions. One aspect of the movie looks at the lives of medical students and explores the boundaries of medical science. Filmed on 35mm with a dedicated cast and crew during a cold winter, the thriller combines special effects and computer animation to help create a frightening experience. Elaine Hegwood Bowen of filmmonthly.com writes, "After Last Season is a different type of film. The psycho-thriller blends science fiction, mystery and murder, with a lot of psychological twists thrown in. I don't really know what it is, whether it's the way it was filmed or the way scenes and situations are played out, but the movie as a whole is so entrancing." Jason Coffman of filmmonthly.com notes that "... this is a film that is completely unlike any you've ever seen before." SYNOPSIS: The end of a season has brought more than a change in temperature to the residents of a city with the discovery of multiple dead bodies. News of the murders attracts the attention of two medical students who are doing work for a medical research company. The two students uncover a device that may help them solve the murders, but with deadly results. English. Widescreen. Dolby Digital Surround 5.1
