DVD Review: A ghost at the feast...

A Walk into the Sea is a rare thing, a fresh perspective on one of the most over-exposed eras in American art history. Warhol's Factory scene and its various unholy apostles have been plundered for years - not least by the apostles themselves - but Danny Williams' contribution to the Factory scene is all the more fascinating for being so unknown. Williams had variously shared Warhol's bed, his home and his movie camera and Williams' films of the Factory's workers and visitors form a large part of this documentary.
Being behind the camera naturally means that Williams himself rarely appears in these films and he seems to have been equally elusive to the memories of other Factory personalities. Many of the better known Warhol names give interviews for the film and it's galling to see how few of them can actually recount cogent memories of Danny Williams. Of course there may be various reasons for that - maybe Williams wasn't really that significant a Factory figure or maybe time and/or substance-abuse have taken their inevitable toll. However you can't help feeling they don't fully remember Danny Williams because they don't really want to.
John Cale, probably the most insightful voice in the film, describes at one point how the Factory was fuelled by insecurity with everyone inventing roles for themselves in order to keep their place there. Now, nearly half a century later, little seems to have changed. With Warhol no longer here to take all the credit the survivors each try to claim a slice of his legacy as their own, often with some justification - but that leaves little room for Danny Williams, who quietly walked out half-way through the party.
It's a credit to Esther Robinson (Danny Williams' niece) that her film is able to reveal the more opportunistic and uncaring side to Warhol's 'Church of Self' without itself being vengeful or vindictive. Recommended.
