DVD Reviews of A Perfect Circle - aMOTION (with CD)

DVD Review: Could have been better.
Summary: 3 Stars

I rather enjoy both Tool and A Perfect Circle but some aspects of this release were rather mediocre and there could have been a bit more.

The DVD:

I am pretty happy that all the videos are in one place. That was a nice thing to do. They are all pretty good videos besides the Bikini Bandits ones. Those were just ridiculous to the point of mind numbing stupidity. I know Maynard likes them but the humor is tasteless and it just ruins the music aspect of the videos by having them put together. I was especially disappointed having them in The Outsider video as that is one of my favorite songs. Bikini Bandits aside the rest of the videos are pretty good.

The Bonus Material has a far worse extended cut of The Outsider video. It also has the runner up videos for the Blue music video which was a cool addition. They definitely don't match the music as well as the winner did so I see why they ended up being runner ups. Not to mention one of them would probably be seen to be too Tool-esque. The last runner up was rather random and nonsensical I thought though. It also has the Bikini Bandits trailers which I felt was a bad idea to plug in a music DVD even if Maynard is in two of them. There is also commentary by Maynard and Billy. Maynard gives insights into the meaning behind the songs which is nice as some of his writing can be tough to figure out. Billy comments more on the musical aspect of the songs but he is only featured on a few videos sadly. It also has a photo album which is alright. Nothing special but none of them really are. It has a 12 minute string of video clips as well that are mostly just random noises and zoomed in shots of random things. They could have had the band in it more and I would have liked it a lot better.

The CD:

Judith (Renholder Mix) - It kind of ruins the song by cutting the guitars out. It is an angry song and was remixed with nothing but electronics. Annoying electronics that do not fit the song whatsoever or change with the progression of the song properly. A typical disappointing remix.

3 Libras (Feel My Ice Dub Mix) - The electronics also do not fit this song very well. It is not a real song. It feels more like they just threw together bits randomly and made the rest of the vocals background noise. Disappointing.

The Outsider (Apocalypse Mix) - This song is a harder one and the electronics just take all of the anger out and it ruins it. It also does not really progress with the different parts of the song very well. The same electronics from the first verse go into the bridge and it does not feel right at all. The chorus ends up being all drums which again just does not work. The second verse works far better though which kind of makes the song feel fragmented musically. Disappointing mix for my favorite song. Could have been so much better.

Weak And Powerless (Tilling My Grave Mix) - This is the best remix on the entire CD. It does not cut out all of the instruments and put in electronics that do not fit the mood of the song and ruin it. It puts a different spin on Weak And Powerless that works. A great song.

The Outsider (Frosted Yogurt Mix) - This cuts out the instruments for the most part. It makes it feel like an early demo where they only had some of the guitar parts finished. The electronics just do not work and it ends up ruining it as well. A typical remix done wrong.

Blue (Bird Shake Mix) - This has the same annoying electronic running through the whole song that is quite irritating. The rest of the electronics just do not work with it either. Disappointing.

3 Libras (All Main Courses Mix) - This is by far the worst song on the entire CD. The electronics are not done right and the vocals are just cut up and thrown in wherever and repeated over and over for no apparent reason. It sounds terrible. The end of the song is unnecessarily long for how little is in it but it milked 7 minutes out of the song and did nothing with that time whatsoever.

The Hollow (Constantly Consuming Mix) - This is a very interesting take on the song. I was quite surprised by it. The song has a bit of a sad feel to it with the piano and violin. Paz shows that she is a pretty talented singer though and the song is a pretty good interpretation.

The Hollow (Bunk Mix) - This is another bad remix. The electronics are not done well and the vocalist just did not do a good job either. His voice just did not work for this song.

Overall the DVD is pretty good. The CD is incredibly disappointing because the people remixing the songs obviously forgot they were remixing rock songs. They took all of the rock out of them and left them with lame electronics and a bunch of annoying vocal edits for the most part. When remixing a rock song you can still have instruments besides drums and scarce guitar! You can redo the drum and guitar tracks and make a whole new song like what was done on Weak And Powerless AND you can add electronics to give it a nice vibe to it as well. But rock cannot be stripped down and made all electronic. It just does not work so please people stop trying to do that!
