DVD Reviews of A Man Among WolvesDVD Review: A Man Among Wolves......Amazing! Summary: 5 StarsI just watched this in entirety last week and I have to say that it is one of the most amazing documentaries I have ever seen. Shaun Ellis is definitely a strange bird.....which is awesome. He is trying to become integrated into the wolf culture as a human, and to do so, he must attempt to live among them as often as possible. As Ellis explains, he must wear the same clothes and eat parts of animal carcasses with them so that he can keep the wolves' trust, stay in their hierarchy, and keep all conditions as natural as possible. I am not a researcher or game warden, so I do not know a lot about wolves or other animals. But, everything in the documentary is very well explained and it is obvious that Shaun Ellis is trying to prepare the wolves for living in the wild, which brings me to something else.
A previous reviewer slammed Ellis for not knowing anything about wolves. The reviewer said that he (or she) had first-hand knowledge about this subject, so I am not going to argue that. But, why would Ellis want the wolves to be friendly and sociable for other people??? He's trying to release them into the wild. The last thing he would want is for these animals to "not care" about unfamiliar human scents and proximity. If they become docile, they won't last a week outside of their compound. I don't care what anyone says, this guy is onto something big. He may not be formally trained as a park ranger or scientist, but he is obviously a brilliant and passionate person who wants to help find a solution to a big problem (wolves being killed by farmers who are trying to protect their livestock). Ellis is not delusional about what he is doing, being quite frank and detailed in his explanations. Again, he is trying to help three abandoned wolves, who were rejected by their mother, learn survival skills in order to live in the wild.
I definitely recommend this! It's great!
DVD Review: DO NOT SUPPORT THIS MAN Summary: 1 StarsPLEASE, do not buy/watch this unless it is for purely entertainment value and not educational. It is painful to watch this show if you have actually worked with wolves or know ANYTHING about them, witch this man clearly does not. His research method must be that he sees something happening one time and then tells the world that this is always the way it is. For example, the alpha eating the liver? In captive packs, unless the wolves are starving, the alpha doesn't even eat first, it's just whoever wants to go first will and can take whatever piece he wants for doing all the work of opening the corpse. And him not showering and only eating meat? I can tell you from personal experience, wolves don't care what you eat or if you use soap, as long as they are properly socialized animals they will be friendly. We have people go in with our wolves after a thorough safety video and get along just fine with our pack and we have never had a serious injury; what he puts Helen through in this show should be defined as abuse. I can't go through everything he spouts as "truth" about wolves, but he is just plain WRONG about so many things about wolves. It angers me that he claims to educate people and then has such terrible facts, and people believe him, because he says he has worked with wolves his entire life! (Which is another lie, he started in 1990).
I will just beg of you: If you must watch this, please do not pay for it and support this awful production, and do not believe anything he says about the way wolves and wolf packs are without really researching it yourself.
DVD Review: Beware! Amateur at Work Summary: 2 StarsThis DVD disapoiinted me so much, and in so many ways. Shaun Ellis of England smacks of Timothy Treadwell who made a lot of money for Discovery Channel by living with bears in the wild for months at a time over a few years until he met his end. Interviews of Treadwell's family and friends revealed a man who could not fit into society, could not hold a job, and seemed to find his place in the world in the mountains with bears. He saw himself as a protector of bears (nevermind those rangers who were there to protect them), and perhaps he did help a bear once or twice from hunters, but for years he spent months at a time until a bear finally had had it with him and 'et him for dinner, along with his girlfriend. A fine ending for an amateur who finally ended up not fitting into the bears' world either! Treadwell did profit from the bears and gained fame and some fortune he so sorely craved.
In comes amateur Shaun Ellis of England, who also proudly announces he gave up (or lost) his wife, children and home because he found his world with wolves. Forget that he has no scientific credentials, has not studied anything about wolves, but he LIKES and RESPECTS them. And better yet, he doesn't have to go into the wild to be with them, he finds a zoo/preserve situation right in the heart of England where people can watch his show daily as he wallows about in mud, growls and snarls at mealtime with the best of the wolves and to keep his "alpha" status, fights to eat the heart, liver and (was it lungs?) of the dead animal. Ellis finds a ready made audience and recognition for the price of admission.
I am disappointed in National Geographic that they apparently did no background research on this man before putting out this DVD. This Brit claims he was a Marine (?). Where did he come from? What did he do before becoming a showman and a wolf? His accomplishments thus far include raising three abandoned pups borne in the fenced preserve and he, this amateur of amateurs, takes it upon himself to teach wolf pups how to live in a pack. Never do they say they plan to release these pups to the wild. Was all this growling, snarling, wallowing in mud and licking the wolves' noses, tongues and fur necessary for him to think of playing a recording of wolves howling in the wild to protect cattle in Poland? Surely this idea could have occurred without the daily show for the public for the price of admission.
Geographic attempts to heighten the sense of danger by repeating over and over that the wolves can turn on Ellis and kill him at any moment - at mealtime, of course.
Ellis appears to be a well intentioned man who doesn't fit into his society and like Treadwell, craves respect and his 15" of fame. It ends abruptly and you wind up feeling you have watched a disturbed man at work. As one child stated when asked what he thought of the show, "I think he's a bit mad!" Out of the mouths of babes.
DVD Review: Good material, but too short. Summary: 4 StarsIt's definitely a very nice documentary. My only complain is that it's too short. Wish it had more content. It's only 56 minutes long...
I was daring with the arrival of my DVD. As soon as it arrived I imediately watched it. But I'm still feeling like "I want more, where's the rest?". What a pity...
Anyway it's a very nice documentary, as I said, and it's worth the price you pay for it. Just don't expect to feel 100% satisfied at the end of the documentary 'coz it's so interesting (the documentary) that you'll probably keep wanting to know more, in the end.
DVD Review: A Must See! Summary: 5 StarsAnyone at all interested in wolves or nature should watch this! This man has dedicated his whole life to these creatures, and is able to give amazing insight into their personalities and lives. He lives with them 24/7, and they have accepted him as a wolf, which is amazing to watch.
