DVD Reviews of A Little Romance

DVD Review: Teenage love, and in Paris and Venice, too!
Summary: 5 Stars

Paris and Venice are two of the most often called "romantic" cities in the world, and here is a film that sets out to prove it. Of course, being a teenager and (either the boy or the girl) having extra money to spend, are two things that help push the romanticism along. What really carries the movie, however, is the fast-paced camera work and the charming personalities of the leads. Two love-stricken youngsters who never bicker, get along fabulosly on all situations, resolve all problems by talking, and have a "fairy godfather" hovering for protection over them at all times, gives you a warm feeling througout the movie.

DVD Review: A Little Romance
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie after I returned from a trip to Europe with 3 girlfriends in our mid-twenties.

It is just a fun movie!

My 19 yr old daughter and I watched it together and really enjoyed it. She knows Bogie & Bacall and was amazed to see the young Diane Lane. We are both Lane fans.

DVD Review: Sweet fare for hopeless little romantics
Summary: 5 Stars

True, Lawrence Olivier's performance was a touch bizarre, but young Diane Lane more than compensates with her luminous performance. First love blooms in the breathtaking settings of Paris and Venice--formidable!

DVD Review: sweet movie about first love
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a sweet story about two teenagers (aged around 14 or 15) falling in love for the first time. It also offers a chance to see Diane Lane in her movie debut playing Lauren, a pretenaturally bright American kid living in Paris with her obnoxious, snobby mother (Sally Kellerman) and her third husband. Diana is cute as a button in this movie.
Lauren meets Daniel, a Parisian movie buff her own age living a Bacall-Bogart fantasy life. They in turn bump into and befriend a charming old pickpocket played by Laurence Olivier. This is not the old master's best work. He plays the role in a kind of squeeky fake French accent, like a pale imitation of Maurice Chevalier -- but it doesn't detract too much from the movie.
Lauren's adopted dad decides to move the family back to Houston (Houston!!!). Dejectedly, she seizes on the idea of running away with Daniel for a few days to Venice. If they can only float in a gondalier under the Bridge of Sigh at sunset and kiss while the bells are chiming, they will be in love for ever, just like Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
The main reason for seeing this movie is the sweet, tender, innocent relationship of the two kids. They seem to belong to a different, much more naive age. Director George Roy Hill handles them with great sensitivity. One roots for them and identifies with them both.
Nice shots of Paris, Verona, the Swiss Alps and Venice don't hurt either.

DVD Review: A little sociopath?
Summary: 2 Stars

I am mystified by all the good reviews of this movie, especially the ones that call it "sweet." Diane Lane's coldness and overall dead expression makes her generally unbelievable in any love story and it's apparent immediately in this, her debut film. She has said herself she's tired of taking nice girl roles, and I can see why -- her career probably would have done much better had she chosen roles like the serial killer in Black Widow instead (remember Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West? The only movie he had any sex appeal in, and the only time he played a sociopath!). In A Little Romance, Lane's body language toward the boy she is allegedly "in love" with comes across as "I wouldn't even look at you if you weren't my costar in this movie." (Not that I blame her, he's not exactly crackling with sexual energy either.) Equally disturbing is her best friend, a girl who compensates for Diane's dead energy by overacting. I'm not saying she isn't good on film - you want to watch her to see what she'll do, just don't try to pass her off as in love! Too bad Melanie Griffith wasn't cast instead - it probably would have been a huge hit. Also disappointing was the great Laurence Olivier whose French accent speaking both English and French sound put on to anyone who actually understands French. The film's only redeeming qualities are the constant references to European versions of classic American films which would have been amusing to American audiences in the 1970s and the beautiful locations filmed against George Delerue's romantic musical score. But be warned--unless you are a total Francophile and are desperate to see a romantic looking movie, don't waste your time on this one.

Description of A Little Romance

An American teenager living in Paris meets and falls in love with a French teenager. Encouraged by an old con man, the two decide to elope.
Sandwiched between Slap Shot and The World According to Garp, George Roy Hill made this effervescent film about first love. A sharp American girl (Diane Lane, in her debut) and a film-loving Parisian boy (Thelonious Bernard, in his only film) fall innocently in love. When the girl's zealous mother (Sally Kellerman) goes ballistic, the young couple fall under the spell of a curious gentleman (none other than Laurence Olivier), who plants the seed to make their love last forever: to kiss under a Venetian bridge at sunset. As the love story becomes an adventure with the young lovers crossing France and Italy, Allan Burns's Oscar-nominated script and Hill's deft touch turn this into a romance for the ages and a movie to smile about. George Delerue's Oscar-winning score and the picturesque European scenery don't hurt either. Ages 7 and older. --Doug Thomas
