DVD Reviews of A Home of our Own

DVD Review: In the Running for Best Movie Ever, in My Opinion
Summary: 5 Stars

I simply cannot understand why some people didn't like this movie. It is a story about a family working together to survive against overwhelming odds. It's the story of humanity, plain and simple. And with all the other trash being produced these days, I find this movie very refreshing. American society seems to have forgotten what a true hero is.

We are told that athletes who earn multi-million dollar salaries are heroes. The stars of action movies have come to be symbols of heroes. Sylvester Stalone isn't a hero. In fact, his movies are often gross mischaracterizations of what a hero actually is. Vigilantes, in a democracy, aren't heroes at all. They are the tip of the ugly iceberg of mob behavior. Only a *reluctant* vigilante can be a true hero---a person who tried to avoid taking the law into his/her own hands but who was forced by circumstances into a role he/she never wanted. And a true hero would at least feel some remorse after a vigilante act, even if justice was ultimately served.

I, for one, have always been more impressed with the less obvious heroes. The young man, for example, who recently graduated high school despite the fact that he is autistic and his doctors had predicted he would probably end up being institutionalized. But with the help of his parents he struggled all his life to overcome his handicap. Now he's on his way to college. He and both his parents are true heroes. Hellen Keller, in my mind, is the among the most admirable of heroes. Stalone's accomplishments pale compared to hers.

And the meaning of the term *anti-hero* is also becoming confused these days. An anti-hero is an unlikely hero, a hero who is not a perfect human being and may actually have deep flaws. But nevertheless they find something within themselves that leads them to perform an act of heroism. People these days seem to confuse the term *anti-hero* with *villain*. Villains are the opposite of heroes. There's nothing heroic about them.

This movie is about:

the quiet often unnoticed acts of heroism that happen every day. The theme of this movie is nothing less than the greatest theme of all human history. The family in this story exemplifies the human struggle of our remotest ancestors, without whom we would not exist and would not be blessed with popcorn, comfy sofas, air conditioning, home theaters, and surround sound, so that we can sit back and feel smug and superior to the little family in this story who exemplify the very best of human qualities.

Anyone who can't see this is suffering from a from of self-imposed blindness.

Description of A Home of our Own

Life for a single mother with six kids, no job and no place to live might be enough to break almostanyone's spirit. But for a proud and resiliant woman like Frances Lacey, it's both a challenge she embraces and a battle she refuses to lose. Starring OscarĀ(r) winner* Kathy Bates (Fried Green Tomatoes) and featuring Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) and "a supporting cast of fine young actors" ("Entertainment Today"), this "radiant [and] inspirational" (The Hollywood Reporter) film is a "touching, involving experience" (Los Angeles Times) that proves home really is where the heart is! Independent, strong-willed Frances Lacey (Bates) is determined to turn hard times into prosperity. Fed up with her supervisor's harassment, her oldest son's (Furlong)increasing delinquency and all of Los Angeles, she packs her kids into a rundown Plymouth and headseast. To some, Frances may look like a woman bound for nowhere but this is one tough lady who's definitely got a destinationthe American dream! *1990: Actress, Misery
