DVD Reviews of A Different World - Season 1DVD Review: Release the rest of the seasons already Summary: 5 Starsenough with the waiting. why can't they release the rest of the seasons on DVD? it's really frustrating for us fans. as a fan of this show, I loved the first season and it gets even better with the rest of the season.
DVD Review: Cam Summary: 5 StarsThis is a great item for people who grow up during this time, brougt back a lot of memories.
DVD Review: Good show Summary: 4 StarsI watched this show some time ago and didn't know it was a spin-off of the Cosby Show. The first season was good, but the seasons got better over time. I recommend this if you are a fan of the series or of the Cosby show.
DVD Review: It's a Dfferent World Summary: 5 StarsI have looked for this DVD series for the past 6years and to find it at Amazon.com bought my treasure hunt to an end, needless to say the quality of this set is amazing and 20years later the issues still apply to everyday life. This show is still ahead of it's time. With all the violence I see in the news regarding young blacks it's very nice to see them accolplishing so many positive things in this series. This show shows that we are not all Rappers, Hoochie Mamas and Drug Dealers. It truly is a nice change when in the Year 2008 there are still not enough African American shows on T.V. depicting the Race in a forth right light this series is a breath of fresh air.
DVD Review: A Real World Summary: 4 Stars This is the start of a very interesting and diverse sit-com. I followed the program while it was in production and enjoyed it tremendously. It got better each season (so be patient with season 1) and with the exception of the hastily produced final episode was/is one of my favorite programs. Where are the other seasons? I had hoped to complete my collection by now. Tune in until they are released for a better look at college life, many of the issues are still relevent today.
Description of A Different World - Season 1From the creators of the top-rated THE COSBY SHOW comes A DIFFERENT WORLD, a fresh funny situation comedy that follows the triumphs, trials, and tribulations of students of Hillman College. This half-hour spin off of the top rated THE COSBY SHOW, was the first ensemble situation comedy to immerse America in student life at a historically black college. Enjoying a successful 6-run season run on NBC, from 1987 to 1993, A DIFFERENT WORLD bas been widely honored for its sensitive, intelligent treatment of contemporary issues. Set at the fictional Hillman College, A Different World was originally conceived as a vehicle for Lisa Bonet's Denise Huxtable. (The exteriors were filmed at Spelman.) Positioned between The Cosby Show and Cheers, the top-rated sitcom quickly became a group effort as the "ordinary" Denise was frequently upstaged by self-obsessed Southern belle Whitley (six-time Image Award winner Jasmine Guy), lovelorn smarty-pants Dwayne Wayne (two-time winner Kadeem Hardison), and his sharp-dressed pal, Ron (Darryl M. Bell). During the first episode ("Reconcilable Differences"), sophomore student Denise meets resident director Stevie (Loretta Devine), a single mother, and roommate Jaleesa, a 26-year-old divorc?e (Dawnn Lewis, who co-wrote the show's Phoebe Snow-sung theme). She and Jaleesa don't hit it off initially, but eventually find common ground--like their aversion to the "Mouth of the South," i.e. Whitley. In the pilot, which aired next, they meet their third roommate, Midwestern motor mouth Maggie (future Oscar winner Marisa Tomei), and the Gilbert Hall triumvirate was complete. Stevie, meanwhile, would leave midway through the season to be replaced by the more imposing Lettie (Tony winner Mary Alice), who is introduced in "The Prime of Miss Lettie Bostic." Several Cosby Show actors dropped in during the first season to show their support, including Keisha Knight Pulliam ("Rudy and the Snow Queen"), Malcolm Jamal-Warner ("My Dinner With Theo"), Phylicia Rashad ("Clair's Last Stand"), and Cosby himself ("If Chosen, I May Not Run"). (Knight Pulliam and Cosby also appear in the pilot). Other guest stars include Keenen Ivory Wayans ("War of the Words") and various In Living Color cast mates, like David Allen Grier ("Romancing Mr. Stone"). Although Bonet and Tomei would leave at the end of the season, A Different World recovered from the loss and aired on NBC for another five seasons. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
