DVD Review: A Beautiful Adaptation!

I have to say I enjoyed this version so much more than the original. Patty Duke gives a flawless performance. Piper Laurie was great too, as were the child actors. Heck, the dog that plays Queenie even was brilliant. The last scene at the bus stop really rips your heart out. I know she's won about 4 or 5 Emmys, but Patty really deserved another for this performance. Definitely add this version to your holiday playlist - it is a treasure! DVD Review: Great Christmas Movie

Patty Duke's amazing performance in a movie version of a famous book
took me to a time that I often heard my parents speak of. The Great Depression brought a way of life that seemed minimal in material but a realization in what was more important. That was friendship, caring, and loving each and every person in our lives. Each day was a new adventure basing decisions on anything that money couldn't buy because so few had any. Yet it seemed the generosity and the teamwork built by that generation to make it through was the foundation on which America was built. Alas today's generations have forgotten or have no connection to this time and have missed what being American is all about. This movie brought the stories I heard all back to me. Such a special gift at Christmas all year round

Well - I had high hopes for this version. It seriously disappointed me. The kid (Buddy) is treacly and too 'modern' and there is too much 'extra' written into the film that is totally unecessary. Duke seems to young to play Sook. It was written witrh a modern audience inmind - an audience that is used to having everything spoon fed to them.
The Geraldine Page version is FAR SUPERIOR - and almost EXACTLY to the actual text of the wonderful book without a lot of extra stuff that is not needed. The mood is striking - the music sublime.
Description of A Christmas Memory
When Buddy (Eric Lloyd, The Santa Clause 3) is abandoned by his parents at the age of seven, he is dumped in the south at the small-town home of some older unmarried cousins. Without friends of his own age, Buddy develops a close friendship with one of the older, simpler ladies, Sook (Patty Duke, The Patty Duke Show) and the two undertake many adventures together. At Christmas time, they bake 31 fruit-cakes which they give as Christmas presents, even mailing them to President Roosevelt and Jean Harlowe! Although Buddy is eventually urged to move on with his life by his incessant cousin Jennie (Piper Laurie, Carrie), the memories of his friendship with Sook lives with him forever. Based on the original novel by Truman Capote, A Christmas Memory is a heartwarming story of love and friendship - and it is now available for the first time on DVD just in time for this holiday season.General DVDs
