DVD Reviews of A Beautiful Mind

DVD Review: Great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I only saw this movie because my boss told me that I was like John Nash ( I was a research chemist) and now retired. I have an IQ which fluctuate from idiot to genius and can solve problems no one else have been able to solve. I have an overactive imagination as well. My opinion of mathematicians is they sometimes confuse mathematics with reality. A mathematical equation is not reality like many mathematicians think it is. Its easy to get trapped into thinking it is. I am a conspiracy nut and sometimes read people wrong. It is because I really was drugged and brainwashed by the government for knowing things I was not suppose to know. My former wife accused me of being schizophrenic and wanted me to get help. I think this movie is part of a conspiracy to cover up the fact people really are drugged and experimented on by the government and the government wants the public to think these people who claimed to have been experimented on with mind control are actually suffering from various brain disorders. But when they really are out to silence you it makes you paranoid. This movie was very informative. I had no idea so many respected Ivy league colleges and Universities were involved in the type of work portrayed in the move.

DVD Review: Crazy = Beautiful; Not Crazy = Jerk
Summary: 2 Stars

What is "beautiful" about the mind here? You're introduced to under-Prof Krunkhead (Crowe) as an egotistical jerk. But then somehow, maybe when you realize he be all crazy, you are supposed to think, gee, despite the fact that he's still a jerk, now I believe his mind is beautiful. It probably doesn't help that Crowe is an egotistical jerk, but still, at what point were my sympathies supposed to swing over to this character? Somehow he wins over all his college chums, despite treating them like stinky cheese - I'd like to know why. And then there's his oh-so-cute proposal of sexual congress to Jen-Con, whose heart and nethers melt at his boldness - cuz she can see through to his mind - his B-YOOOOO-T-FUL mind. Which just happens to be crawling with spiders but still...

Speaking of Jen-Con, this is yet another faceless placement of her pretty face. Jen-Con role #2132. It's as if she peaked immediately with "Labyrinth", because that's the only distinct part I can remember her in. And even that is a bit fuzzy. But I especially like the moment when she gets to ACT by smashing up her bathroom cuz Beautiful Mind will have to wait a few decades for blue pills to counter his thorazine. And then Bowie pops out I believe - it's hazy.

The sad thing is that Pretty Brain's psychosis is way more interesting than anything about the movie's real world. Continue the plot line about Ed Harris and his suitcase atomic bomb and I'd be right there with ya. Of course then the movie couldn't be considered serious and win serious awards and be taken seriously by serious people. Oh, and I guess the fact that it's a true story hurts...although how are we to know what is true and what is an illusion? Breathe deep the gathering gloom already.

Which brings me to the true breaking point, which might also be true to life, I'm too indifferent to look it up. That is when Sexy Head gets his Nobel Prize for something he did 50 years ago and makes a horribly sappy mawkish reference to "only love" something something. Seriously, I'm not sure I heard it cuz my head was exploding. I'd rather he thanked his imaginary friend and his niece while revealing that Ed Harris was real all along and the suitcase bomb was in that VERY ROOM and the call was coming from inside the house and... ANYTHING but bringing that tripe about love in. Perhaps he should have repeated his straight-forward proposal of copulation which won him the lovely Jen-Con.

I only wish I'd been paying attention to movies when this won the Academy Award (C) so that I could listen to the sort of pretentious jerks who ran out and learned everything they could about his Blonde-Poking economic theory and exposited on its brilliance while also jawing on about the brilliance of this film and Crowe's brilliance (did he even break a sweat?) and so on. Oh the beautiful minds.

DVD Review: Movie Version of the Book by the Same Title
Summary: 4 Stars

As I usually try to do, I read the book prior to seeing the movie. The book was much clearer than the movie but I thought the movie was very well done.

The movie is about the Nobel Prize winner in economics, John Nash. It stars Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe, John Nash is a Princeton student when he develps Schizophrenia. The movie is very accurate in its portrayal of delusions and hallucinations, though it was sometimes confusing - especially the part about whether his roommate really exists.

Both Crowe and Connelly do excellent jobs. The movie goes light on Nash's bi-sexuality, does not go into his having a deadbeat dad, and ignores his relationship with Eleanor Stier. Other than these things, it is pretty true to the book.

Nash does have a beautiful mind. Once he starts losing his mind due to the tragedy of schizophrenia, it is heartwarming to see that he maintains the respect of his Princeton colleagues and students. I applaud this movie for raising peoples' consciousness about schizophrenia.

I highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys drama and is interested in mental illness and resilience.

DVD Review: Great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a psych nurse for many years and this was a great movie. It arrived quick and in great shape.

DVD Review: An Inspiring Film
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film in a packed cinema and I was encouraged by the response at the end from the audience. They remained in their seats riveted not moving for a considerable period of time and were obviously moved by what they had seen. So many Hollywood films portray schizophrenia incorrectly and those who suffer from this terrible disease as scary, violent, and often not redeeming people. Finally, audiences were able to see a film that accurately depicted this tragedy in a man of considerable intellect.

This movie was a breath of fresh air from the likes of Me, Myself and Irene with its perpetuation of the schizophrenia stereotypes.

I saw a similar reaction by an audience at the end of the film Cutting For Stone when it appeared at the Montreal Film Festival a few years ago. This was the story of a young teen developing schizophrenia who did not do as well as John Nash. What it did show was a more typical example and the two films together paint a realistic image of the disease and its impact.
