DVD Reviews of 1408 (Widescreen Edition)DVD Review: A psychological drama mixed with a ghost story Summary: 5 Stars
Over the years Steven King has written some impressive books, with the protagonist being a writer. In his novels/films we have some examples of the following that illustrate this theme: The Shinning (1982), Misery (1993), and Secret Window (2005).
Director Mikael Håfström was nominated for an Oscar in Best Foreign Language Film in 2004, but most recently, he directed the American action thriller Derailed (2005). Now he is back with 1408, based on a Steven King's short story. We are going off the record to tell you horror fans that this is the best movie this year for this genre, not just because of the theme it presents--a psychological drama mixed with a ghost story--but of the performance of our leading actor John Cusack and supporting actor Samuel Jackson.
Story:
Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is a non-fictional writer of the supernatural books. They involve the most popular haunted places throughout the United States and so he travels to disprove these occurrences. After staying at a so-called haunted Inn--where there are no ghosts--he leaves the next morning to pick up his mail and finds a post card. The card has a warning that tells him not to enter room 1408 at the Dolphin hotel in NYC. However, he accepts this as a challenge even though--once arriving there--the manager (Jackson) pleads with him and tells him that room has a history of evil involving 56 deaths and that no one has lasted more than an hour. Enslin does not seemed to be concerned by this and believes that the manager is just giving him a lot of supernatural hype--to get people to stay at his hotel.
In a short while and after his talk with him he ventures up to his room, he unlocks the door, and to his surprise, the room looks very normal. When the clock radio starts playing by itself and begins the one hour countdown, he is surprised and frightened by this occurrence. Will he survive the haunting of room 1408?
Review:
Our director Mikael Håfström, does a outstanding job of bringing to the big screen an old school theme of and horror and anxiety in which the viewer will get the impression that they are watching an old episode of the Twilight Zone or Outer limits. Because just like those vintage shows, our director focuses more on the acting and photography, rather than special effects that we have grown accustomed over recent years with this supernatural genre--like Thirteen Ghosts (2001) and White Noise (2005).
The photography is efficient throughout the duration of the film from the filters--8 mm visual appearance of the ghosts--to close-ups of Cusack showing his mental and physical appearance--goes from cool and calm to insane--and what works the best is that the photography gives us a very surrealistic manifestation of his environment. Most of the story takes place in this hotel room.
The "Oscar worthy" acting is what sells 1408 because of the range of emotions that we watch our main character experience. In the beginning of the film, he is cool, calm, as if a reporter would be covering a news story. However, as the film progresses we watch him turn from reality to uncertainty of his very existence as the room changes before his eyes, in which the effects give us a very theatrical style and very reminiscent of the Twilight Zone. What was also refreshing is the performance from Jackson. He portrays a very calm and sophisticated character rather than a loud mouth--of what we are accustomed to in so many of his acting roles.
You might be disappointed in the story not because they keep you guessing, but they do not fully explain his (Cusack) personal problems and this leaves you wondering how he looses his faith in his profession of being a non-fictional ghost writer.
The Verdict:
This is excellent supernatural horror movie that will keep you guessing to the end. The performances are exceptional from Cusack and Jackson--it is very refreshing when you see actors playing out of character and this usually equals Oscar nominations. The story was weak in part but over all one of the best movies since What lies Beneath (2000). Permission granted!
