I am an absolute beginner when it comes to drumming, and this DVD wasn't very helpful for me. The hand movements are too fast. Also, I would have preferred that the angles be shot from the same view I'd have while playing a drum instead of the opposite. It is simply too confusing to watch the hand movements from the opposite direction. It definitely isn't a good teaching tool for someone who doesn't already know how to drum. This DVD seems like it would be helpful for someone who can just listen to the rhythms and pick them up. I think I might find this DVD useful in the future once I am able to learn the basics of drumming and that is why I rate it with a least a 3.
101 Drum Circle Rhythms-2 Cd's Poster
This is a 2 hour DVD of hand drumming rhythms for the Djembe, Congas, Doumbek, Bongos, Ashiko, and other hand drums. It is not really intended as an instructional DVD, but a collection of 120 different rhythms to play and improvise from. No chit chat, other than a brief intro, no notations, no names of rhythms. It is an easy to follow set, with each rhythm numbered, and about a minute long. It's a huge volume of material. Ideal for intermediate to professional level drummers, but a beginner can grow into these. Many are slower tempo, so if you are new to hand drumming, you will still have plenty to work with. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------You can easily see all the rhythms being played up close. This entire DVD is a close up shot of a djembe drum with two hands playing it, rhythm after rhythm. It gives you an idea of how the various notes and sounds are made. It is not necessarily the only way to play them, just a starting point to expand your repertoire. You can pick them up quickly and easily. Ratigan is a percussionist, teacher, drum circle facilitator, and session musician who has accumulated a massive repertoire of rhythms. He has been playing drums since 1968 and worked as a percussionist in almost every type of music from symphony orchestra to rock bands. He toured and recorded with the Manhattan Skyline, the Soul Corruptors and others. He has been facilitating, and attending drum circles for over 20 years. He was also a performer in a large number of television and film shows, including 8 seasons on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.
